Inter-Disciplinary and Multi-Disciplinary PhD Research

As I look back I am trying to connect the dots that I have been trying to follow the footsteps of Prof Dr JC Browne at UT Austin, TX, in multidisciplinary research. He was, my PhD Supervisor during 1990-95 whose pic is here:

JC Browne's students were from electrical and computer engineering department, computer science department, aerospace department, economics and other departments as described below. Browne received the 2004 University of Texas at Austin Career Research Excellence Award for maintaining a superior research program across multiple fields over a 45-year career.

Browne’s research over five decades has spanned many domains in computer and computational science including many cross-disciplinary collaborations with physicists and engineers on topics ranging from binary black holes to control systems for prostate cancer treatments.
Browne has attained fellow status in five different professional societies across several areas including the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Institute for Constructive Capitalism.

JC's areas of focus spread far and wide. One day during our CODE Research group meetings the discussion shifted to the area of hardware performance from our usual area of focus of Visual and Parallel Programming. A group member who was a post doc (Dr Ravi Rao) made a remark saying that he thought none of the people in this group seems to be qualified to speak in this particular area. JC calmly listened to the member completing his remark and then said "Gentlemen, you may not know that around 2 decades ago in the early 1970s, this precisely was my area of research! Several of my PhD researchers's topic belonged to this particular area."

Thereafter when we made a few inquiries, we found that his areas of specializations spread far and wide. Parallel and Visual Programming was only one of the groups. He had research groups in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering and even pure Mathematics and Physics running in parallel. There were several areas which he had explored and left behind.

Browne received the 2004 University of Texas at Austin Career Research Excellence Award for maintaining a superior research program across multiple fields over a 45-year career during which he supervised or co-supervised the Ph.D. research of 69 students in four different fields.

About James C. Browne

James C. (Jim) Browne, one of the original members of the Computer Science Department at The University of Texas at Austin. Jim was an institution at the departmental and the university level, being a faculty member at the university for more than 45 years. He was a past Professor of Computer Science and Physics and holder of the Regents Chair #2 in Computer Science. He was the first permanent chairperson for the department and served as chair three times. Browne was also the founding director for the computing centre at Queens University Belfast in Northern Ireland.

He attained fellow status in five different professional societies and areas: the Association for Computing Machinery, the British Computer Society, the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Institute for Constructive Capitalism.
Browne published about 500 papers over his 50-year research career and in 2004 received The University of Texas at Austin Career Research Excellence Award for maintaining a superior research program over many years.

But the accomplishments of which Browne was most proud are serving as the supervisor or co-supervisor for the graduate studies of 68 Ph.D. students and 65 master’s degree students and for a substantial number of undergraduate honors theses. He has also served on several hundred Ph.D. supervision committees across multiple disciplines.

Dr Irfan Hyder, A Humble Student of JC Browne:

Before my MBA in 1987, I had done BE Electronic Engineering in 1985. After MBA, I did my MS Computer Engineering in 1989 and after that PhD in Computer Science in 1994. My research areas include parallel computing, electrical engineering, software engineering, energy management, MIS and ERP, Experiential Learning, Higher Education, School Education, Strategic Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Business research,...

Irfan Husain, Mazdak, Begum & Akhtar Husain Raipuri and Zafar Umar

I have been reading Mazdak/ Irfan Husain's articles in Dawn for last 20+ years. Although I often disagreed with his opinions but yet used to read them regularly.
Son of acclaimed writers Akhtar Husain Raipuri and Begum Hameeda Akhtar Husain Raipuri. Begum Hameeda Akhtar, an acclaimed writer herself was daughter of Zufar Umar author of نیلی چھتری famed detective books. Zafar Umar was the first اردو writer of genre of detective fiction.

When Begum Hameeda Akhtar published her first  book after the death of her husband, my mother and sister who read her autobiographical book wanted to meet her. We went to her house behind
off khalid bin walid road near Paramount Book store on  Sufi Street, one lane off main Khalid Bin Waleed Road, PECHS, Karachi.Thereafter we went a few times and enjoyed her company. Great woman. Currently brother of Irfan Husain lives in that house.

Dawn columnist Irfan Husain passed away early Wednesday in Dorset, England, his family said.
In a tweet, his son Shakir Husain said he was grateful his father "slipped away gently" and that he was able to be with him. "See you on the other side, Abba."

In a column in Dawn published earlier this year in August, Husain had said that he had been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer nearly three years ago.

"After nearly three years of this barrage, I must confess there are times I wish it would just end quietly without fuss. But then I look outside the window and see the flowers, trees and birds in our garden, and I am happy to be still alive," he wrote in the column.

Columnist Irfan Husain passes away
KARACHI: Columnist, author and a global citizen as he used to describe himself, Irfan Husain, passed away early Wednesday in Dorset, England. He was 76.

Husain wrote weekly columns for Dawn and in one such write-up published in August, he shared with readers that he had been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer three years ago, according to Dawn.com.

He wrote for weekly Outlook, The Star and later Dawn under various pseudonyms. His writings were never soft on governments and often evoked strong reactions.

He joined the civil service in 1967 after obtaining a master’s degree in economics, while also pursuing his love for writing.

He served as culture secretary, information minister and also a diplomat in Washington for a short span before his retirement in 1997.

Born into a family in Amritsar, where reading, art, culture and discussions were encouraged, Husain was educated in Paris, Ankara and Karachi. His family migrated to Pakistan at the time of independence.

Besides his taste for literature, art and music, he was also known for his love for culinary. He wrote on food and occasionally shared his culinary expertise through Dawn EOS’ Epicurious column.

In 2012, he authored a book titled Fatal Faultlines: Pakistan, Islam and the West. At its launch, he described the thought of writing a book as ‘frightening’ since he had been mostly writing columns. According to Husain, his book was primarily intended for a Western audience and for them to understand how they were viewed by the Muslim world, but at the same time, it was an attempt to explain to Muslim readers why they were viewed so negatively in the West.

According to the publisher Harper Collins, Husain pursued a parallel and covert career as a freelance journalist for most of his working life, writing under a succession of pseudonyms. He divided his time between the UK, Pakistan and Sri Lanka since 2002, the publisher said.

In one of his recent columns for Dawn years after being diagnosed with cancer, Husain said: “After nearly three years of this barrage, I must confess there are times I wish it would just end quietly without fuss. But then I look outside the window and see the flowers, trees and birds in our garden, and I am happy to be still alive.”

My Wing Sung Pen

Wing Sung Pen. Fountain pen.
Tons of hard work and cherished memories with this friend.
I got one in 1975, when I was in 8th class, this same color, and it remained in my use till 1987. All my exams: Matric, Inter (HSC1 and HSC2), Engineering (40 course papers), MBA (20 courses papers) and their preparatory work on reams and reams of paper was done with that one pen. I left it in my stuff when I went to USA in 1987. Remember seeing it when I returned in 1995. Then I don't know where it vanished. May be it is there somewhere in that old stuff.

I remember the smoothness with which it would glide on the paper. It's nib due to long use had become thick. But, it flowed in my hands.

Social History Archival Project of Family Letters

Letter Archival Project: In my spare time, I am currently working on a project to archive family letters from 1940s till 2000s. My parents had somehow stored the letters from pre-partition days till their death in 2003-04 spanning 5 generations with around five thousand items. These include letters from times they were in India before partition, and after partition in Hyderabad, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and then back in Karachi. All kinds of personal correspondence of my parents from my grandparents generation, from my aunts, uncles generation, my siblings generation and also from me and my siblings' children generation. The letters coming from uk, usa, Brazil, India, Australia, Middle East, East Pakistan and different cities of Pakistan and india. Treasure trove of social history of the uprooting of families in india, their survival struggle in Pakistan from scratch, and then a gradual settling down. The project includes i.e (1) labeling, (2) dating (3) sorting, (4) identifying the senders and recepients, (5) cataloging (6) scanning, (7) deciphering the handwritings and transcribing, (8) editing, (9) categorizing, (10) contextualizing, (11) interpreting... ...

My MS Library Research at UT Austin in 1989

Think about researchers who reviewed hundreds of papers that they had to access manually! UT Austin,  Texas in 1987 had around 6 millions items distributed in several departmental libraries. Some of these were several storyed library buildings. There was also a huge 6 floor central library. For example, In Engineering building library each engineering discipline had their own encyclopedia type abstracts volumes. Computer and control abstracts had around 50 volumes (encyclopedia like thick volumes containing the abstracts of all papers published). Volume 1 and 2 contained the index of citations only. From the alphabetical index search you identified the particular volume,  say volume #34 containing abstracts of a particular area. Then you pulled out volume#34 to read the abstracts and titles. If you thought the abstract was any good or relevant and the article was worth reading, then you noted the reference in a diary. Once you have noted these 20-30 worth reading citations, the next stage was to get the article. Fortunately, library catalog was computerized and UT Austin had a huge subscription of journals. Online catalog told you whether whether the journal was available and at which library, and which floor and which shelf. Generally from 20 citations you found 5-7 not available on campus. For these you needed to go to inter University loan service that typically took from 2weeks to two months to get the photo copy from a partner University. If the journal was available on campus, you went to that physical library location to find the volume of journal. You were lucky if the journal was available on shelf. Often another student may have taken out the volume and placed it in the library somewhere. For that you had to contact the library staff to search the item and hold it for you  which may take a few days. Finally, you find the relevant volume and read the article. If it is really good and relevant you got to get the photocopy from the machines where you had to insert a prepaid cartridge to get the photocopies.

Which is the "competent authority" for investigating a crime such as abduction in Pakistan

“Which is the "competent authority" for investigating a crime such as abduction in Pakistan?

“Competent Authorities” for Investigation & Enforcemen suffer from conflicts of jurisdiction, duplication, redundancies, multiple chains of commands, and mismatch of authority with responsibility. There is lack of transparency, and accountability. There is a perennial tension between Enforcement vs Investigation induced by the ends vs means dichotomy! Enforcement requires immediate action and is dominated by the need for "results" (ends) over the need for "due process" (means). However, investigation leading to conviction by courts requires meticulous attention to "due process" (means) over the need for "results" (ends).

Due process requires education and training. It requires knowledge of criminology, logical deduction, intricacies of law and piecing together of clues and power of observation and awarness of crime psychology. This is the  reason why Scotland Yard makes reading of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot mandatory for investigators.

Unfortunately there is no such training for investigation agencies. They are driven by Gestapo type of "results" and are dominated by the "chhitrol" (چھترول) mentality of SHO's in the "thana" culture. They have all the  authority with no responsibility. The responsibility mish-mash is visible from the plethora of investigation agencies as given in the attached diagram.

For example: Which “Competent Authority” is responsible for investigating an Abduction
Who is to be held responsible for lack of investigation, and inability to catch the culprits? Who should the PM  punish for investigation failure of an abduction?

There are overlapping responsibilities among ICT Police, DMGs, Secretary Interior Ministry, Secretary Defense Ministry, Crime Branch, Special Branch, Elite force, CID (Crime Investigation Department), CLC,….. National Counter Terrorism Authority, Anti Narcotic Force, Frontier Constabulory, Rangers, Intelligence Bureau, Military Intelligence, ISI, ISPR, FBR Investigation Unit, NAB, FIA, …or Chief, Minister of  Interior of Defense, PM himself. Or CM to whom the Home Department reports under which provincial police departments operate.

70 years of Failure of Dominant Narratives

Competent Authorities of Pakistan and the Source of their Incompetence

What is "Competent Authority" and how their incompetence breeds mafias:
"Competent Authority" is the code word used by bureaucracy itself to hide the name of decision maker. This is often the secretary of Ministry but may denote a committee also or some other decision maker, but the footprint of the secretary must be there in that decision. All notifications issued by ministries and decisions made by ministries use the word "competent authority".

Investigative Agencies-

Add caption

you scratch my back, I scratch yours.

Constitutional corruption has created the Incompetence of the "competent authorities" of Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Defense in not being able to monitor, manage, delegate, differentiate, distribute the responsibilities among zillions of investigation and law enforcement agencies and also the incompetence in establishing transparency and accountability.

There is a maze of LEAs and investigation agencies: Police, IB, NAB, Ehtisab Bureau, ISI, ISPR, MI, FIA, NCD (Narcotics Control Division), ANF (Anti Narcotic Force), Elite Force (Commandos Punjab), ATF (Anti-Terrorism Force), BC (Baluchistan Constabulary), FC (Frontier Corps), CB (Crime Branch), SB (Special Branch), Rangers in Sindh, CID (Criminal Investigation Division), CIA (Criminal Investigation Agency), CLC (Car Lifting Cell, Khi)......

Oil Price Hike Mafias in Pakistan

'Incompetence of the competent authority: Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, OGRA'
Incompetence of the competent authority: Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, OGRA
The relationship between OGRA and Ministry of Energy, Petroleum Division. There is a conflict of responsibilities and authorities which allows these mafias to fester.

Hoarding and Price Manipulation Mafias

'Incompetence of the "competent authorities" responsible for lack of price control under several ministries. Beware of media brigade that wants to protect and cover-up the shenanigans of the "incompetent authorities" by shifting the blame to the poor people. They are trying to absolve themselves of the responsibility of ensuring that the incompetence of these so called "competent authorities" is punished!'

Constitutional Corruption vs Financial Corruption

Corruption is breaking of law to gain some financial benefits. Law is under constitution, so constitution is at a higher pedestal than law. Constitutional violations have a greater negative impact than the financial corruption because constitutional violations destroy the institutions and their relationships, thereby leaving scars that may take decades to heal. They impact of constitutional corruption last for decades and corrupts generations.

It is incompetence of the competent authority, stupid!

20yr itch

Why there are Crime Mafias in Pakistan- Multiple Investigation Agencies with Overlapping Functions

How many investigation agencies are there in Pakistan? Which other investigation agencies exist that are not mentioned in the attached lists? I think there are investigating units also in FBR, EOBI, SBCA, SBP etc? I read somewhere many years ago that there are 40+ agencies!
How many corrupt have each of them nabbed after collecting enough evidence to convict them in courts.
Incompetence of the competent authorities responsible for collecting solid evidence. How much extortion and blackmailing by them? Any research?

How Mafias Come into Existence in Pakistan: There is no single authority to be held accountable

Mafias are created when different government agencies start playing ping-pong with their responsibility. They are all the time fighting turf wars often with the connivance of the vested interests, who then cling together to form cartels that start playing one government department against the other, one ministry against the other.

Government has designated a specialized ministry and an authority for tackling each type of problem. They are paid from taxpayers pocket. They need to be punished for their incompetence and aggravation of problems. Each Mafia feeds on a problem of a particular area which can not exist without the collusion of the authority and the relevant ministry. We all thought that IK's تبدیلی will change the working of these rulers who call themselves as "competent authorities". He will hold them accountable and will punish them. Instead he like many others have been ensnared by the bureaucracy and its labyrinth of notifications issued under the disguise of "competent authority". If he and his supporters would have seen a few episodes of the "Yes Prime Minister" serial of BBC, it would have informed PTIans that tabdeeli can only be brought by breaking the code of this bureaucracy. Aviation Fiasco: Incompetence of CAA, PIA and Aviation Ministry

CAA has recently certified that all the licenses issued by CAA are genuine and are not fake. Please note the count of fake licenses was 262 in the report flashed by the aviation minister in the assembly which was followed by the Prime Minister speaking about  that the fake licenses while trying to implicate previous governments and indirectly holding them responsible for PK8303 crash. The report of dubious licenses mentioning 262 pilots somehow got reduced to 141 pilots by the time the report was in the hands of media signed by Maritime Secretary. Interesting to investigate why maritime affairs secretary was investigating the aviation licenses. Was he part of Aviation Secretary investigation committee then why the aviation secretary did not sign it, and if he was not part of the committee then why was he not part of the committee. It seems to be incompetence of the competent authority of Aviation Ministry's Secretary Aviation at all the levels. Total Mess. Muck was supposed to be thrown up to malign the opposition parties under whose rule the pilots were appointed. All this only to protect the uniformed air marshal from criticism related to pk8303 crash and shift the blame elsewhere. It was the incompetence of CJP who allowed uniformed air marshal to continue as Chief under the stealth Doctrine of Necessity proclaiming in Supreme Court "Who would be held responsible if something happened". Now that something has happened who should be held responsible, other then the CJP? Furthermore, the incompetent ministers of the  incompetent prime minister who wanted to take the laurels of fighting the corruption by humiliating the opposition and destroying the lives of hundreds of pilots and thousands of other license holders from CAA working as technicians and other aviation personnel.

Bureaucracy knew about the "sadistic" inclinations of PM. They prepared a preliminary report in the typical "competent authority" code language. IK and his Minister took the bait and bamboozled it in parliament.
IK took sadistic pleasure in tormenting 262 pilots, blaming and humiliating the opposition" in the assembly. This sadistic campaign was continued on social media through their blind media brigade that gears into action without consideration of consequences.
First the EU imposed a ban for 6 months, then it was UK followed by Malaysia, emirates and other destinations in the world. PIA flights were grounded along with all technical staff with CAA licenses working around the world inflicting billions of rupees of losses on all Pakistani carriers and aviation industry.

Once the damage was done the "competent authority" simply used the other coded words to extricate itself from the mess leaving the PM and his minister in the muck. As usual Brilliant Sir Humphrey in BBC serial "Yes Prime Minister" making the minister to cut a sorry figure.
sadistic /səˈdɪstɪk/, adj, deriving pleasure from inflicting pain or humiliation on others. Eg: "IK took sadistic pleasure in tormenting 262 pilots, blaming and humiliating the opposition"

All Licenses Issued to Pilots are genuine, now claims CAA!
Report of dubious licenses was signed by secretary of maritime affairs. What has maritime affairs to do with aviation licenses. Incompetence of the competent authority of Aviation Ministry's Secretary Aviation. Total Mess. Only to protect the uniformed air marshal from criticism related to pk8303 crash. Incompetence of CJP in allowing uniformed air marshal to continue as Chief under Doctrine of Necessity

Learning and Life is My Autobiography

No, writing poetry, blogs, essay, or reflections is greatly cathartic. Things that greatly troubled me, once I got them out of my system through my writing, they stopped bothering me. Once expressed, they stop festering. This is how I forgot many of my longings. My long blogposts are my learning and my efforts in my life. The blog had been a great cathartic experience for me. I write blogs not as much to impress others but more so to organize my thoughts. My thoughts typically are running in circles. They go from one realm to another. And then keep coming back. Once I write them, they become organized, and structured. During writing I also identify the links that I have not explored earlier. I also find links that I knew but had not thought about so clearly and crisply. It is a wonderful experience.

As I connect this with Donald Murray's 1991 essay "All Writing is Autobiography" I feel that this true.

When Ayub Khan Accused Fatima Jinnah Of Being An Indian And American Agent

Source: Time Magazine datelined Christmas Day 1964. It sheds interesting light on how far back this game of the security establishment conjuring up images of US-India collusion go. Ayub Khan actually accused Fatima Jinnah of being pro-Indian and pro-American. Oldest trick in the security establishment’s book. -YLH

“They call her the Mother of the Nation,” sniffed Pakistan’s President Mohammed Ayub Khan. “Then she should at least behave like a mother.” What upset Ayub was that Fatima Jinnah looked so good in pants. The more she upbraided Ayub, the louder Pakistanis cheered the frail figure in her shalwar (baggy white silk trousers). By last week, with Pakistan’s first presidential election only a fortnight away, opposition to Ayub had reached a pitch unequaled in his six years of autocratic rule.

The Big Stick. White-haired Miss Jinnah, 71, the candidate of five ragtag and usually disunited opposition parties, was picked mainly because she was the sister and confidante of the late revered Mohammed Ali Jinnah, father of his nation’s independence. But Pakistan’s response to her razor-tongued attacks on Ayub’s highhanded ways has surprised and shocked the government. Students throughout the nation staged angry protest marches against the regime, and at least one demonstrator was killed by police in Karachi. DOWN WITH THE AYUB DICTATORSHIP, cried posters in the East Pakistan city of Dacca, where students enthusiastically proclaimed Miss Fatima Jinnah Week. In Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest city, student unrest prompted the government to close all the schools indefinitely.

Most legal groups in Pakistan have come out for Miss Jinnah, and were denounced by Ayub as “mischiefmongers.” In reply, the Karachi Bar Association overwhelmingly adopted a resolution urging “the party in power to get rid of the notion that wisdom, righteousness and patriotism are the monopoly of their yes men.” The usually complaisant newspaper editors defied the regime’s attempts to make them endorse a restrictive new press law.

To Ayub’s claim that he is trying to develop “basic democracy,” Miss Jinnah replied: “What sort of democracy is that? One man’s democracy? Fifty persons’ democracy?” As for Ayub’s charge that the country would revert to chaos if he is defeated, his rival snapped: “You can’t have stability through compulsion, force and the big stick.”

Running Scared. Actually, Ayub has been a reluctant and benevolent dictator, who has vastly improved the stability of a country that was paralyzed by squabbling politicians before he took over. Considering Pakistan’s backwardness and poverty, the Ayub-designed electoral system is not half bad, giving the vote to 80,000 middle-and upper-class electors. While that is a tiny percentage in a total population of 110 million, most of those millions are not only illiterate but totally ignorant of political issues. With heavy support in rural areas, where many Moslem electors particularly disapprove of a woman’s candidacy and where Ayub’s economic reforms have helped more than in the cities, Ayub is still expected to win the election by some 60% of the vote.

Nonetheless, he is running scared, because Candidate Jinnah has managed to focus every form of discontent in the country. To brake her bandwagon, he abruptly decreed that elections would be held Jan. 2, instead of March, as originally scheduled. Explaining lamely that the situation is “a little tense,” the government also rescinded a law specifying that political rallies must be open to the public.

At closed meetings with groups of electors, Ayub answered practical questions sensibly enough, but kept lashing out at the opposition with growing anger. Countering Miss Jinnah’s repeated charge that he had been unable to restrain the U.S. from helping Pakistan’s No. 1 adversary, India, he set out to portray her as pro-Indian and pro-American. Ayub’s campaign, in fact, was turning increasingly anti-American.

Though U.S. aid (about $5 billion since 1951) is vital to the nation’s wretched economy, a leading member of Ayub’s party cried: “America never was our friend and never could be, because as a nation aligned with the anticolonial movements, we are at cross-purposes with America.” As for Ayub, he plainly regretted ever calling elections in the first place. For after six years of insisting that Pakistanis were not ready for democracy, the campaign had shown that Mohammed Ayub Khan probably isn’t either.

When Fatima Jinnah Was Declared ‘Traitor’ By The Powers-That-Be

  • 2.1K

July 9 marks the death anniversary of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, and as the masses recall her struggle and the services she rendered for the country, they are also reminded of how she was declared a traitor by the powers that be.

Even after the passage of so many years, anyone who raises their voice against the state and authoritative forces is labeled a traitor or is deemed to be working against the interests of the country.

Let us look at the circumstances in which Fatima Jinnah was given this label, how she was pushed against the wall and was ultimately forced to confine herself in her own home.Fatima Jinnah had bravely resisted the self proclaimed rule of Field Marshal Ayub Khan. She was seen by the masses as Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s natural successor following his demise in 1948. General Ayub is believed to have manipulated the system to malign the stateswoman and involve her into controversies. The anti-democracy forces used negative tactics, to the extent of tampering the 1965 presidential election results to defeat her.

Their efforts were aimed at suppressing her voice, so much so that they stopped her speech from broadcasting on Quaid-e-Azam’s death anniversary. Ayub Khan went on to declare Fatima Jinnah a foreign agent , despite the fact that it was him who himself established the Pak-US bond.

The sagacious stateswoman, politician, a dental surgeon by profession was a close adviser to her brother and a co-founder of Pakistan Women’s Association, which played an important role in the settlement of the migrant women at that time.

Fatima Jinnah breathed her last on in Karachi on 9 July 1967 due to a heart failure. Her demise is also a subject of controversy as it is shrouded in mystery, with some reports claiming she died of unnatural causes.
